This week, Forsgate Country Club's Frank Esposito, a member of its Teaching Professional staff, is playing in final field of the qualifying tournament for a chance to play on the PGA TOUR Champions Tour in 2019.  Esposito  successfully advanced to the Final Stage, which is being held this week at the TPC Tampa Bay, when he finished 8th among 82 golfers at the Florida qualifier in Lakeland.  Esposito is one of only 78 competitors to reach the Final Stage. After the first round, Esposito is currently in 5th place.

“This is a significant achievement for Frank as hundreds of the world’s best senior golfers and former PGA TOUR players battled to earn a berth in the prestigious Final Stage of the PGA TOUR Champions Qualifying Tournament,” said Chris Schiavone, Forsgate’s Managing Partner.  “Everyone at the club wishes Frank well in his quest to qualify as an exempt member of the 2019 Champions Tour.  We are proud to support such an accomplished member of our staff.”

Suzy Whaley joined the PGA of America in search of more competitive playing opportunities, a modest ambition that 17 years later has morphed into her becoming the first female president of the 102-year-old association.

Whaley, who for the last two years has served as its vice president, has formally be elected to a two-year term at the PGA’s annual meeting.

“Not enough adjectives,” a past president, Derek Sprague, said shortly after her election. “Historic doesn’t do it justice. So I’ll use a new adjective we learned this week. Amazable.”

Whaley, 51, is the 41st president of the PGA. Jim Richardson, the senior vice president business development for Troon, was elected vice president, while John Lindert, the director of golf/chief operating officer at The Country Club of Lansing in Lansing, Mich., was elected secretary.

On October 4, 2018, Golf Kitchen Magazine, in collaboration with Edgewood Country Club of River Vale, NJ, hosted the first-ever “Golf Kitchen Edgewood Fine Dining Soirée” and the premiere of the “Golf Kitchen Culinary Excellence Awards.”

Anthony Villanueva, Edgewood's Executive Chef and Host Chef for the event, welcomed guest chefs from some of the most prestigious golf clubs and resorts throughout the Northeast and Florida: Anthony Giacoponello, Executive Chef of Sebonack Golf Club; Keith Armstrong, Executive Chef of Westchester Country Club; Michael Ruggerio, Executive Chef of GlenArbor Golf Club; Zach Bell, Executive Chef of Addison Reserve Country Club, and Dana Iannelli, Executive Pastry Chef of Addison Reserve Country Club.

The Metropolitan Golf Association has announced, Jack Wall of Brielle, N.J., as the recipient of the 2018 MGA Junior Player of the Year Award, Presented by Callaway Golf. Wall’s second-place finish as low amateur in the 103rd Met Open served as the 17-year-old’s crowning achievement of the season, propelling him to earn the honor that is now in its second year. Wall, a senior at Christian Brothers Academy, will be recognized for his accomplishment at the MGA’s 121st Annual Meeting and Dinner on Wednesday, December 5 at Westchester Country Club in Harrison, N.Y.

The MGA Junior Player of the Year Award, Presented by Callaway Golf, was established to recognize excellence among the highly talented junior competitors in the Met Area, with an emphasis put on the region’s top junior events including the Met Junior Championship Sponsored by MetLife and the Carter Cup, the MGA’s invitational junior stroke play championship. Dennis Walters is an elite golfer who was paralyzed from the waist-down at the age of 24 following a golf cart accident. He has since dedicated his career to sharing life lessons and inspiring fans and disabled golfers of all ages through golf clinics and special performances at more than 3,000 worldwide appearances. Former spokesperson and national ambassador for The First Tee, his message is to always continue hoping and dreaming. He is one of only 11 honorary lifetime members of the PGA of America. Walters was also honored with the 1978 Ben Hogan Award and was a 2018 recipient of the USGA’s Bob Jones Award.

Forsgate Country Club has announced the hiring of a new Director of Instruction, Bill Schmedes III.

Prior to joining Forsgate, Bill was Director of Instruction at Fiddlers Elbow in Bedminster, New Jersey, for the past four years.  Bill also spent time in Florida working as a Head Golf Coach for the Gary Gilchrist Golf Academy.

Bill has been recognized as one of the top golf coaches in the country.  Golf Digest has rated him as both a Best Young Teacher in America as well as Best in State (NJ).  Golf Tips Magazine named Bill to their Top 30 Instructor list, Future Champions Golf selected him as a Top 25 Elite Junior Coach in the USA, and he earned a U.S. Kids Golf Top 50 Kids Coach honorable mention.

Bill has worked under some of the top golf instructors in the world and has assisted over 14 tour players on the PGA, LPGA, European and Web.com Tour.  His students have won amateur events such as the Massachusetts Amateur, Met Amateur, NJSGA Women’s Public Links, and U.S. Women’s Amateur...

Jay S. MacNeill, a contributor to golf in New Jersey as a president of both the New Jersey State Golf Association and Plainfield Country Club in Edison, is the 2018 recipient of the NJSGA/NJPGA New Jersey Golf Distinguished Service Award.

The Distinguished Service Award is presented annually by the NJPGA in collaboration with the NJSGA to honor an individual who has provided exemplary service and contributions to growing the game of golf in New Jersey, consistent with the honor, values and traditions of the game. MacNeill will formally receive the award at the annual NJSGA/NJPGA Celebration of Golf on Thursday, Oct. 25, at Canoe Brook Country Club in Summit.

Under his leadership, the NJSGA made great strides, including the sale of its Golf Cottage in Bloomfield, the long-time home of the NJSGA which preceded the moving of the headquarters to the current site at Galloping Hill Golf Course in Kenilworth.

During his presidency, the Women’s Committee was added to the NJSGA, bringing with it an additional seven championships. He also oversaw a restructuring of the publication of the organization’s magazine.
